OSHA’s Newly revised 29 CFR 1910.178 (1)
Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Regulation (Effective date: Dec
1, 1999)
The Law basically states
The employer shall ensure that
each operator of a powered industrial vehicle is competent to operate such
vehicle and has been trained according to the newly revised regulation.
This regulation covers all seven classes of vehicles in the
material-handling field.
Before permitting an employee
to operate a powered industrial truck (Except for training purposes)
The employer must certify
that:
-
All operators have
received and passed formal training.
-
All operators have been
evaluated and judged competent on the type of equipment they will be
using.
-
All operators are trained
for work place conditions or for any hazards that may be present.
-
The employer must have a
system in place to ensure that all powered equipment is checked on a
regular basis. If any equipment is found to be in need of repair or in
anyway unsafe it shall be taken out of service.
-
The employer must also
maintain appropriate documentation to back up such training and
maintenance of the equipment.
-
Refresher training &
evaluation must be done at least every 3 years.
